Buying Coffee at a Colombian Farm: Questions Worth Asking

Ask which beans are from the farm, which are sourced from nearby producers, and whether the lot is roasted in-house or elsewhere. None of those answer.

Start with the coffee you will drink

Ask which beans are from the farm, which are sourced from nearby producers, and whether the lot is roasted in-house or elsewhere. None of those answers is inherently bad; they simply tell you what you are purchasing. If you want a gift, ask for sealed packaging with a roast date and sufficient product information.

Taste before choosing

A quick tasting can be helpful, but ask what brewing method was used. A coffee that tastes bright as filter coffee may present differently in espresso. If you usually drink coffee with milk, tell the host. You can still appreciate how different processing methods affect flavor without pretending everyone must like the same roast.

Plan for the journey home

Consider whole beans versus ground coffee, how long the bags will spend in hot luggage, and your destination’s current customs rules. Do not assume every type of coffee is treated identically at every border. Keep receipts, and ask the farm which lot or variety the bag represents.
